Nowadays you have so many karaoke music on YouTube of popular songs, so you can sing along. There are also many videos with lyrics to popular tunes. So, I was thinking, in order to boost your creativity a bit, why not try writing completely new lyrics to a familiar tune? It could be your favorite or maybe one that you feel inspires you. Listen to many different styles, check out different singers - male and female, groups, old and new...get some inspiration and listen carefully... Choose ONE song that really speaks to you - musically or with words. Maybe the original lyrics can inspire you when you write yours. Change some words or change everything! You can create a completely new meaning to a song you choose! It could be really interesting, not only for you but also for others. I would suggest that when you figure out what your lyrics are - record the song with your lyrics! One thing really important to bear in mind when writing the lyrics - sing them while your write them, cause you have to be able to sing them well. See how they fit when singing. It really depends on the song but really, keep it simple. They can rhyme, but you don't have to overdo it. Analyze other tunes and see how their lyrics work and try to use the same pattern to form your own. If you don't feel comfortable singing the tune, why not ask some of your friends that you think could do the honor? They might really enjoy discovering new meaning with YOUR lyrics!
Being a jazz singer, I often encounter different lyrics to same tunes. Then I pick the ones that I feel better. Sometimes I even write my own, when I can't feel the original lyrics. It's not that unusual in jazz, cause at the beginning most standards were instrumentals and then later someone wrote lyrics to them. Play a little and be creative!
I would really love to see what you came up with, so post your lyrics in comments and let me know which tune it was! If you recorded yourself, feel free to share! Maybe people will start singing your lyrics instead! :)
